ATTENTION :
Dear all Malaysian students in New Zealand,
Please be informed that a severe earthquake has struck the North's Island East Cape, generating tsunami activity.
Therefore, you are STRONGLY ADVISED NOT TO TRAVEL to those areas as aftershocks may happen.
Please be further informed, that should you have travelling plans, you are strongly advised to keep EMNZ'S Office informed on your whereabouts. Please take extra careful within this time and keep on listening to your local radio station for updates.
The quake - 7.1 in magnitude, 130km north-east of Te Araroa at a depth of 55km at 4.37am - was felt from Northland to Wellington in the North Island, and in the top of the South Island. Severe reports were felt in Gisborne and the Bay of Plenty.
Civil Defence has issued a tsunami warning for the East Coast of the North Island (including Auckland, Waikato and Bay of Plenty). The warning has been lifted for the upper South Island.
CIVIL DEFENCE ADVICE
Civil Defence issued the following information for East Cape residents:
-
Expect aftershocks and remember to drop, cover and hold.
-
Look after yourself and get first aid if necessary. Help others if you can.
-
Assess your home or workplace for damage. If the building appears unsafe get everyone out. Use the stairs, not an elevator and when outside, watch out for fallen power lines or broken gas lines. Stay out of damaged areas.
-
Look for and extinguish small fires if it is safe to do so. Fire is a significant hazard following earthquakes.
-
Listen to the radio for updated emergency information and instructions.
-
Do not overload phone lines with non-emergency calls.
Thanks & Stay Safe
